I am not a Bears fan, but

I had the opportunity to attend the Jim McMahon Celebrity Golf Classic in Tempe in 1995. I got to meet (and play golf with) a ton of celebrities and many of them were athletes from Chicago. Met McMahon, Steve McMichael, George Gervin, and probably a dozen or so more. Played 18 holes with Jan Stenerud (one of only a handful of kickers in the NFL Hall of Fame). However, by far the highlight of the weekend was meeting Walter Payton. I was (and am) a 49ers fan so Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott, and Jerry Rice are royalty to me. However, I always thought of Sweetness as my favorite player - loved the way he played the game so unselfish and he actually blocked and caught passes and cared more about winning than rushing titles.

So this was a staggered/shotgun start and my group was 13B. We get to the 13th tee box and see that the celebrity in 13A is Walter Payton. I was taking a picture of him while he was addressing the ball and my 1995 camera made a noise. He dropped his club, walked over to me, took the camera and my hat and walked back and hit his tee shot. Came back later and took a picture with me. Later in the round when things got backed up, I was sitting in the fairway when I see a golf cart coming back towards our cart from the green. Then I see Walter jump out, empty both golf bags from our cart onto the ground laughing the entire time. He jumps back into his cart and heads back towards the green. And all I could do was laugh.

He was an all-time great and he didn't care. He just had fun with life. RIP Sweetness.

And by the way, Jim McMahon had a crappy reputation but that dude is nice. I met him for about 5 minutes the first day and he walked by at the pool 2 days later and remembered my name and came up to me and asked if I was having a good time. Thanked me for coming.

And Ed 'Too Tall' Jones was the only complete a-hole I met there. The other celebrities were all approachable and seemed happy to interact with us low-lifes. Ed was a d!ck.
